“Once we get over this obstacle I hope we can be friends again” – Cheryl Cole on Ashley Cole

Understanding Mrs Cole
Why Cheryl’s reunion with Ashley isn’t really so bad

Gossip magazines are flying off the shelves. Tabloid offices are working extra hours. Social networking sites are going berserk. The nation is appalled at the news that Cheryl Cole may be set for a reunion with her ex-husband Ashley. Pondering her personal happiness is one thing, but is it really fair for media sources to question whether a potential reunion could be damaging to Cheryl’s career?

People underestimate how difficult it must be to be Cheryl Cole. (No, I’m not being sarcastic.) Can you imagine the amount of people she must encounter that just have their own interests at heart? The people that want to befriend her for her money? The men who want to date her (and whatever else) just so that they can boast about it to the lads when they’re at the pub? Working such a hectic schedule and meeting so many different people must undoubtedly make it difficult for Cheryl to trust anyone. When contemplating these facts I can see how she must feel so compelled to reunite with Ashley.

Yes, Ashley cheated on her and betrayed her trust. But don’t lots of couples go through this? How many times have you had a friend come to you with a similar story, or maybe you’ve even experienced it yourself? As Kelly Cutrone would say, the truth doesn’t always come like a shiny bluebird on someone’s shoulder. People cheat, people lie, it’s life. But people also forgive, and sometimes blips can lead to a stronger relationship in the long run. I’m not saying that everyone who has someone cheat on them should forgive, but I do feel that a lot of unjust criticism is thrown at those who do choose to forgive a cheating partner. Despite being an optimistic person, I can’t help but feel that it’s a bit unrealistic for people to expect that life and relationships just sail along happily with no bumps in the road.  She was in love with this man, she married him. It isn’t as black and white as cutting someone out of your life when you love them that much. She’s still a young girl, she’s human, and she probably just wants to share her success with loving friends. Despite his flaws, Cheryl knows that Ashley loves her for who she is and not who she is perceived to be, and this quality must be incredibly important to Cheryl at the height of her career.

Many will argue that Cheryl is a role model for the nation, and that in taking Ashley back she will be setting an example to her fans that it is ok to let somebody treat you badly. But surely it is unfair of us to assume that she will live her life based on what we expect of her? It would certainly be unfair to question her career abilities based on decisions that she makes in her personal life. As a clever girl who has created anastronomical empire, Cheryl is wise and will make the right decision. It is our job, as fans, to support her in whatever choices she makes and ensure that her personal life does not overshadow our opinions on her career.
